When looking for an apartment in Pristina, insist on having a category A electricity provision. When you are sitting through yet another powercut, you will be glad that you have the best electricity provision in Pristina (believe me, if A is this bad, you don't want B or C!)
Also check that you have a gas cooker (rather than electric), and check how your shower is heated. We had another power cut while I was having a shower this morning, that wasn't pleasant!
Electricity provision in Kosovo is terrible, for multiple reasons, and it's everyone's favourite topic, but I thinkt he top three reasons are
1) Kosovo's inabi;ity to generate enough electricity to power itself, therefore having to import electricity from Bulgaria.... and Serbia (!!)
2) The refusal of K-Serbs to pay their electricity bills to a Kosovar electricity company, so the company cannot afford to provide 24/7 power.
3) The masses, and masses of illegal building that goes on. This is all making the building of a new flat twice the size above my Belgrade apartment looking terribly legal!
Also, bring a wind up torch and a decent laptop, with at least two hours of power on the battery. I have survived by using my torch to locate that bottle of wine, and sticking yet anotehr epidsoe of desperate housewives onto my laptop.
Socialising during a power cut is also interesting, but that's another story. |
