If you are a UK citizen and you are living abroad for an extended period of time, you probably have questions like "do I have to pay NI contributions", "how do I know if I'm considered non-resident?" and "why is the sky green?"
The answers to some of your questions may be at the HM Revenue and Customs site in the special FAQ for non-residents.
Frankly, my main problem is I just cannot be bothered to wade through all that information. I'll probably hit 60 and have no pension and probably get stung for 40 years' backdated tax too. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
If you have any more useful resources, including for citizens of other countries, feel free to hang them here. |

Hmm...perhaps I should take a look at that link! Just today in fact I got a call from relatives back in Edinburgh. A letter had arrived saying that I had to pay some NI contributions for the year when I was abroad. Well, it does say I have until 2012 to pay - I think I can set it aside for some time. (I promise I won't forget!) _________________ Balkan File

NI contributions while you were abroad...? Right, according to that government blurb, you are only considered "not ordinarily resident" if:
| Code: |
* your absence and employment from the UK covers a complete tax year (i.e. 6 April to
5 April), and
* you spend less than 183 days in the UK during the tax year, and
* your visits to the UK do not average 91 days or more a tax year over a maximum of 4 years.
|
(note, it's "and... and...") so you probably didn't fit into that. But stick around, you'll be a non-resident before you know it. But by then you'll be more worried about Serbian tax, anyway.... |

Well, it was to make up contributions to the state pension. I presume that's what the NI helps to pay for? (I'm really not clued up in tax at all).
And it was for the tax year when I was at Belgrade Uni, so I would have still been considered a student I presume. _________________ Balkan File
