Well, what to say about Montenegro? Finally broke free from the unflatteringly-named "rump" Yugoslavia after a referendum in May 2006, though it had been on the cards for years during the Milošević era.
There was a huge concentration of foreigners there at one time because of its proximity to Kosovo and of course to Serbia proper - many NGO's set up operations there because they weren't exactly welcome in Serbia itself. There were also a great number of journalists there at one time - many of them used Montenegro to enter Serbia illegally when Milošević fell!
Now, though, I get the feeling that the number of foreigners has waned. After all, we are talking about a country with a population of only 600,000-or-so. On the other hand, Montenegro has become something of a hotspot for property buyers. I blurbed about this elsewhere, so I won't repeat myself (read Montenegro Property Boom) but suffice to say there are a lot of Westerners, not to mention nouveau riche Russians sending property prices skyrocketing in this attractive Adriatic destination.
Quite what they all do when they discover the water gets turned off for several hours every day during the summer, I don't know... |
