OK, right, I'm driving from Belgrade to Novi Sad, and I stop at the traffic lights just on the way out of Belgrade. I should mention that I am driving a car with the special black 'E' registration plates that indicate a car owned by a foreign company, but they look a lot like the 'A' diplomatic plates too.
There is a young guy, student type, standing there hitch-hiking. I think, might as well offer the guy a lift, he doesn't look like an axe-murderer, the car is empty and I am probably going his way. I lean out of the window and say, "Novi Sad?"
The guy looks at me and then looks up the road, points in the direction I am going, up the Belgrade to Novi Sad motorway and says,
"Streit ahed, streit ahed"!!
Absolutely true. And, after I cleared up the misunderstanding (yes, I did know where Novi Sad was) I did actually give him a lift. |
